Introduction:
Your thyroid affects nearly every system in your body, so when it’s not working properly, the effects can be widespread. From fatigue and weight changes to more serious conditions, thyroid dysfunction can show up in many ways. In this issue, we explore common thyroid-related disorders and what signs to watch for.

When Thyroid Function Goes Off Track: Conditions to Know
Your thyroid plays a key role in keeping your body in balance—but when it’s out of sync, a range of health issues can follow. Here are some common thyroid-related conditions to be aware of:
🔹 Hypothyroidism (Underactive Thyroid)
When your thyroid doesn't produce enough hormones, you may feel tired, gain weight, feel cold easily, or experience dry skin, low mood, and constipation. Often caused by Hashimoto’s disease or iodine deficiency.
🔹 Hyperthyroidism (Overactive Thyroid)
Too much thyroid hormone can cause rapid heartbeat, weight loss, anxiety, heat sensitivity, and shakiness. A common cause is Graves’ disease—an autoimmune condition.
🔹 Goiter
This is an enlargement of the thyroid gland, often visible as a swelling in the neck. It may be linked to either hypo- or hyperthyroidism and often results from iodine deficiency.
🔹 Congenital Hypothyroidism
Some babies are born with an underactive thyroid. If not treated early, it can impact growth and brain development—highlighting the importance of newborn screening.
🔹 Thyroid Cancer
Thyroid cancer can sometimes go unnoticed but may present as a lump in the neck. Early detection is key for successful treatment.
🔹 Myxedema Coma
A severe and life-threatening form of hypothyroidism that requires emergency care. It can lead to confusion, dangerously low body temperature, and other serious symptoms.
🔹 Graves’ Ophthalmopathy (Thyroid Eye Disease)
Often linked to Graves’ disease, this condition causes eye issues like bulging, discomfort, and double vision.
